MEDIA RELEASE -  Narrogin success with Emergency NBN Satellite Services Grant

The Shire of Narrogin has recently been successful in obtaining 100% funding through the STAND (Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters) Project to upgrade NBN satellite communications at the Shire Administration Building and Narrogin Recreation and Leisure Centre.

The Shire’s Administration Building is recognised in the Shire of Narrogin’s Local Emergency Management Plan as a coordination centre in the event of an emergency and the Regional Recreation Centre an approved regional evacuation centre for the Shire and the broader district.

These upgrades will allow members of the general public to access telephone and internet in the time of an emergency, should the traditional communications network be damaged and comes with battery backup.

Shire President Leigh Ballard said “It is important to have the lines of communications open between family and friends during the event of an emergency” “It is distressing for all involved when you do not know whether a loved one is safe due to the loss of telephone and internet lines” he added.

The Shire acknowledges the Commonwealth’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications for the grant and the McGowan Government’s. Department of Fire & Emergency Services for coordinating the rollout.

STAND Evacuation Centre solutions are designed to help improve telecommunications resiliency for people temporarily occupying designated evacuation or coordination centres during times of disaster.

The services are via a Wireless Access Point (WAP) allowing access to those in the vicinity. The work is expected to be completed in coming weeks.
