Introduction

The Shire of Narrogin is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users within the Shire. Through proactive planning and significant investment in road infrastructure, the Shire prioritises safety, sustainability, and functionality. Our 10-Year Road Maintenance and Construction Program, regular audits of road conditions, and innovative safety measures such as solar-powered speed messaging signs underscore our dedication to building a safer community.

Our approach includes:

  • Partnerships with state and federal agencies to secure funding and implement safety initiatives.
  • Engagement with the community through our Works Request page, allowing residents to suggest improvements or report issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Strategic initiatives that position us as a proactive leader in road safety, benefiting both local residents and visitors.

Shire of Narrogin Invests in Road Safety

The Shire of Narrogin is a proud WALGA RoadWise Council, dedicated to advancing road safety initiatives throughout our community. In 2024, WALGA RoadWise acknowledged the Shire’s commitment to enhancing road safety in the region by presenting us with the prestigious 2024 RoadWise Award. This award recognises our active efforts to make Narrogin’s roads safer for all.

Initiatives such as the installation of solar-powered speed messaging signs contribute to safer roads by promoting responsible driving behaviors, providing real-time feedback to drivers. These projects reflect our dedication to creating a safe, sustainable environment.

The Shire is dedicated to promoting road safety from an early age. Our Children's Road Safety Education Bike Track, located at Sydney Hall Park on Sydney Hall Way, offers a safe and interactive environment for young cyclists to learn about road rules, signs, and riding practices. This initiative is part of our commitment to fostering a safety-conscious community by teaching children essential road safety skills in a fun and engaging way.

The Shire of Narrogin's Variable Digital Messaging Trailer (VDMT) (refer picture below)  is a significant addition to its road safety initiatives. This tool underscores the Council’s commitment to fostering a safer environment for residents and visitors alike. Funded by the Council, the VDMT demonstrates proactive efforts to address road safety concerns by using modern technology to deliver timely and impactful messaging.

One of the key advantages of the VDMT is its versatility. The trailer's digital display can broadcast a range of critical information, including road safety reminders, traffic condition updates, and event notifications. This flexibility ensures that the community receives relevant and current messages tailored to different situations. For example, during peak travel periods or vital road works, the VDMT can alert drivers to exercise caution, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

The VDMT also strengthens the Shire’s capacity to engage with the community. By placing the trailer in high-visibility locations, the Shire can effectively capture the attention of road users. The prominent, real-time display makes it an excellent medium for raising awareness about important road safety campaigns, such as the dangers of speeding or the importance of wearing seat belts. Its presence reinforces a culture of mindfulness and shared responsibility among drivers.

Beyond its immediate role in road safety, the VDMT offers broader benefits to the community. It serves as a valuable communication tool during emergencies, enabling authorities to disseminate urgent information swiftly. Additionally, its mobility allows it to support a variety of events across the Shire, ensuring consistent communication wherever it is needed. By investing in the VDMT, the Shire and Council of Narrogin, not only promotes safer roads but also enhances the overall quality of life for its residents and visitors.
