Diversi-tea at the Library Sensory Garden
Members of the community gathered in the Shire of Narrogin’s Library Sensory Garden for Diversi-tea – a morning tea celebrating the International Day of People with Disability.
Guests enjoyed the sunshine and enjoyed some musical entertainment from the talented Cherie Dawson who also shared her experience of living with mental illness and how we can improve inclusivity and acceptance in our communities. Attendees were also introduced to participants in accessability’s Community Connection program. The program is about encouraging members to stay connected and engaged in the community.
The International Day of People with Disability is a United Nations sanctioned day that is celebrated internationally each year on December 3 and is about promoting public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. Each year a focus theme is chosen and for 2020 the theme was “not all disabilities are visible”.
Millions of people, including people within our own community, are currently living with disability that may not be obvious to those around them. This focus is a timely reminder of the importance of removing barriers for all people living with disability in our communities.
Shire of Narrogin Deputy President Tim Wiese talked about the importance of the Shire’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan and the commitment by Council “to ensuring that Narrogin is a community which is accessible and inclusive for people with a disability because a community that recognises its diversity and supports participation and inclusion makes for a richer community life”. He encouraged guests to have the conversation about how the Shire can continue to put access and inclusion at the forefront of our minds when planning future projects for the Shire.
