Australia Day Community Breakfast

The Shire of Narrogin held its ever popular Australia Day Community Breakfast on Tuesday 26 January 2021. Due to ongoing COVID restrictions, the event was relocated to an outdoor venue, making for a truly Aussie experience!. MC David Harrison entertained guests with his inimitable wit and humour, and the Bush Poet Frank Heffernan shared his insights on life with thoughtfully penned poems. Ten Narrogin community members took the Pledge of Commitment to Australia, and four deserving members of Narrogin’s community received Citizen of the Year Awards.

The Shire President Leigh Ballard announced the Nominees in each Category for the Community Citizen of the Year Awards noting that this year the presentation would also include a Certificate of Commendation.

The winners of the 2021 Citizen of the Year were: 

  1. Community Citizen of the Year (Youth) - Katelyn Lansdell - in recognition of her roles on various school committees and volunteering at community and sporting events. 
  1. Community Citizen of the Year (Senior) - Joan Porter - in recognition of her role as a volunteer for the CWA for many years and her participation in the many fundraising events. Joan is also a volunteer at the Narrogin Palliative Care Unit and the Salvation Army and provides support to cancer patients at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital.
  1. Active Citizenship (Group or Event) - Narrogin Meals on Wheels - Meals on Wheels was introduced in Narrogin in 1974 and through the dedication of its many volunteers has continued to deliver meals for 46 years. The service is coordinated by a committee of volunteers, some of whom have been involved from the beginning. Meals are delivered five days a week including public holidays, Easter and Christmas on a roster staffed by 25 volunteers. Often, the Meals on Wheels volunteers are the only contact that day for some people, a friendly face can make all the difference. 
  1. Community Citizen of the Year - Jan Shepherd - for her role as the volunteer coordinator of the Community Assisted Transport Service. This is almost a full time job and Jan draws on her years of experience as a trained nurse to provide support and advocacy to ensure clients’ needs are met.

Lindsay Rowley was awarded a Shire of Narrogin Certificate of Commendation and Narrogin’s favourite MC David Harrison, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of nine years of volunteering at the Shire’s Australia Day Community Breakfast.

The Shire of Narrogin, together with hundreds of Australian communities received funding support from the National Australia Day Council to assist with the delivery of a COVID safe event. Narrogin’s Shire President Leigh Ballard  said ‘’On behalf of the Shire of Narrogin, Elected Members and the community, I’d like to thank the National Australia Day Council for the generous financial assistance that made today a day to remember’’.
