Renewable Diesel Biorefinery
The Shire of Narrogin has recently received a $200 Million Development Application from FutureEnergy Australia (FEA) for the establishment of a Renewable Diesel Biorefinery at Lot 31 Great Southern Highway, a 65ha site, 4km immediately south of the Narrogin Townsite, at the new Narrogin Future Energy Park and serviced by the strategic industrial routes of the Great Southern Highway, and Wanerie Road.
Mr Dale Stewart, the Shire’s Chief Executive Officer said ”This type of Biorefinery is a first for Australia and will create 35 new direct jobs in addition to the employment that will be required during construction.” This is an incredibly exciting project, and a development of this size will be a great economic boost for Narrogin and districts and lead to the potential for other allied support services and industries at the Future Energy Park” he added.
The Shire’s Planning Officers are currently working through the application, which will be referred to the State’s Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) for final recommendation to the Minister for Planning for approval or rejection with conditions as they see fit. The JDAP is made up of 3 external people in addition to the Shire of Narrogin’s Shire President and Deputy Shire President.
FutureEnergy Australia (FEA), a 50:50 joint venture between Carnarvon and Frontier Impact Group, is planning to build the facility, which will have the initial capacity to produce up to 18 million litres of renewable diesel per annum. The modular design of the facility means that production can be quickly increased, or similar facilities can be rapidly built close to other demand centres.
The renewable diesel at these facilities also has the potential to be further refined into sustainable aviation fuel, while the high-temperature pyrolysis process also produces high-quality biochar and wood vinegar.
Renewable diesel can be used to replace conventional diesel without requiring modifications to diesel engines. It also burns cleaner and has a lower emissions profile compared to conventional diesel. The emissions from the plant are potable water and steam.
