π£ NFP TAX DEADLINE | Hey local clubs & community groups – heads up! πβοΈπβοΈ
From 1 July 2023, non-charitable not-for-profit organisations with an active Australian Business Number (ABN) that self-assess as income tax exempt are required to lodge an annual self-review return with the Australian Tax Office (ATO).
We know many of you are busy running awesome events, sports, arts, health & support services around Narrogin – and doing it all as volunteers πͺβ€οΈ
But we’ve been hearing a lot of:
“What’s this new ATO tax exemption thing all about?” π€
So here’s the easy version π
If you’re a not-for-profit (NFP) – like a footy club, art group, aged care support, or community association – and you're NOT a registered charity, the ATO now wants you to check & confirm your tax-free status each year β
Don’t worry! It’s free and fairly simple once you’re set up online π₯οΈβ¨
π’ You’ll need to do this if your group:
β
Has an active ABN
β
Is not a registered charity (ACNC)
β
Fits into one of these 8 common NFP types:
- Community service π§π€π§
- Cultural π
- Educational π
- Health π₯
- Employment π·
- Resource development πΎ
- Scientific π¬
- Sporting β½
If that’s you, it’s time to complete a “self-review” online to keep your tax-exempt status πΌπ
π« You don’t have to become a charity (unless that’s right for your group – and that comes with a LOT more rules π)
π¬ We know it’s confusing – and many rural NFPs are feeling overwhelmed. So, don’t overthink it and definitely don’t restructure your group unless you’ve sought advice first.
