Shire of Narrogin Secures $50,000 Streets Alive Grant to Transform Narrogin Railway Precinct Pathway

The Shire of Narrogin is thrilled to announce the receipt of a $50,000 Streets Alive Grant to bring the Railway Precinct Pathway Project to life. Proudly delivered by the Town Team Movement, in partnership with Main Roads Western Australia and WALGA, the Streets Alive funding program supports initiatives that enhance community spaces, connectivity, and safety. The Railway Precinct Pathway Project is scheduled for completion by June 2026 with a matching $50,000 Shire contribution and will create a safe, accessible pedestrian route between the Narrogin CBD and the Narrogin and Dryandra Visitor Centre, housed at the State Heritage-listed Narrogin Railway Station.

Designed with inclusivity and connectivity in mind, the pathway will accommodate pedestrians, wheelchair users, cyclists, and e-scooter riders. It will also feature interpretive panels highlighting cultural and historical landmarks, a picnic area, landscaping, and a striking 10-metre-long PM 706 replica metal artwork created by local artist Paul Elliott.

Shire President Leigh Ballard highlighted the importance of the project, saying, “This pathway will not only enhance accessibility for our community and visitors but also contribute to safer traffic conditions along the Great Southern Highway by encouraging vehicles to slow down in the area. The Railway Precinct Pathway will celebrate Narrogin’s heritage, create vibrant public spaces, and strengthen connections between the Visitor Centre and other key locations. We are deeply grateful to Town Team Movement, Main Roads WA, and WALGA for supporting this transformative project through the Streets Alive funding program.”

The Railway Precinct Pathway is a vital component of the Narrogin Heritage Railway Precinct Masterplan, developed through extensive community consultation to preserve and enhance the area’s historical and cultural value. The project will form part of the ‘rail trail’ concept, enriching visitor experiences and improving safety and accessibility.

In addition to improving connectivity between the CBD and the Visitor Centre, the pathway will create a welcoming public space near the Visitor Centre, complete with shaded seating areas. The inclusion of the PM 706 replica metal artwork will serve as a tribute to Narrogin’s railway heritage, with the original PM 706 steam locomotive proudly returned home in November 2024.

The Shire of Narrogin extends its heartfelt gratitude to Town Team Movement, Main Roads WA, and WALGA for their partnership in delivering the Streets Alive funding program. This project will leave a lasting legacy by enhancing safety, accessibility, and community pride while celebrating Narrogin’s rich railway heritage.
