Shire of Narrogin CEO Announces Resignation; Recruitment Process Underway

The Shire of Narrogin has today announced that Chief Executive Officer Mr Dale Stewart has tendered his resignation, following his acceptance of the Chief Executive Officer position with the Town of Port Hedland.

Mr Stewart will conclude his employment with the Shire on Friday, 1 May 2026, providing a three-month transition period to ensure continuity and a comprehensive handover.

Shire President Mr Leigh Ballard thanked Mr Stewart for his service and leadership over the past seven years.

“While Council accepts Dale’s resignation with some sadness, we fully understand and respect his decision,” President Ballard said.

“Dale’s tenure as Chief Executive Officer has been exemplary. His leadership has strengthened the organisation through robust governance, sound financial management, and the introduction of innovative systems and practices that will serve the Shire well into the future.”

President Ballard acknowledged Mr Stewart’s significant contributions both internally and externally, including major infrastructure, housing and heritage projects, improved emergency management capability, strong advocacy outcomes particularly with respect to renewable industries, and steady leadership during challenging periods such as COVID-19 and the Narrogin East bushfire recovery.

“Dale leaves the Shire in a strong position, supported by a capable Executive team and a committed workforce. On behalf of Council and the community, I sincerely thank him for his dedication and wish him every success in his new role,” Mr Ballard said.

Mr Stewart said it had been a privilege to serve the Shire and community of Narrogin.

“This decision was not made lightly. Narrogin has been home for almost eight years, and I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together,” Mr Stewart said. “I am committed to ensuring a smooth and professional transition and will continue to work closely with Council, the Executive and our partners over the coming months to wrap up key matters and support a strong handover to my successor.”

Council will now commence a structured and transparent recruitment process for a new Chief Executive Officer, including state-wide advertising to attract a strong field of candidates.

As part of good governance and continuity planning, Council also intends to appoint an interim Chief Executive Officer during the transition period. This approach reflects Council’s desire to maintain organisational stability and momentum, recognising recruitment timeframes, notice periods for senior executives, and the importance of uninterrupted leadership.

“Appointing an interim Chief Executive Officer during the transition is a proactive and sensible step,” Mr Ballard said. “It ensures the organisation remains well supported while Council undertakes a thorough recruitment process and considers candidates from across Western Australia and beyond.”

The Shire will provide further updates to the community as the recruitment process progresses over the coming weeks.
