Shire of Narrogin Celebrates Australia Day 2026
The Shire of Narrogin marked Australia Day 2026 with a community-focused celebration that recognised Australian values, honoured outstanding local contributions, and brought residents together in a spirit of unity and pride.
The celebrations took place on Monday, 26 January 2026, commencing with the Australia Day Community Breakfast at Alby Park. From 7.30am, community members gathered to enjoy a shared breakfast before the formal proceedings, which included a Citizenship Ceremony and the presentation of the Australia Day Awards.
During the Citizenship Ceremony, Narrogin proudly welcomed its newest Australian citizens, acknowledging the significance of this milestone and celebrating the diverse backgrounds that enrich the local community.
As part of the morning’s proceedings, the Community Citizen of the Year Awards recognised individuals and groups whose service, leadership, and dedication have made a meaningful and lasting impact in the Shire of Narrogin.
The Community Citizen of the Year – Youth Award was presented to Ms Sophie Rosich, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to community sport and volunteering. Ms Rosich has demonstrated exceptional leadership through her work with the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association, where her commitment and initiative have strengthened junior participation and operational efficiency.
The Community Citizen of the Year – Senior Award was awarded to Mr Doug Sawkins, acknowledging his long-standing contribution to environmental conservation, community education, and tourism. Mr Sawkins’ dedication to the stewardship of Foxes Lair, combined with his volunteer service at the Narrogin & Dryandra Visitor Centre, has significantly enhanced community knowledge and appreciation of the local environment.
The Active Citizenship Award (Group or Event) was presented to the Narrogin Repertory Club, recognising its decades-long contribution to the cultural life of the Shire. Through volunteer-led theatre productions, the Club has provided accessible performing arts opportunities, fostered creativity, and strengthened community connection across generations.
The prestigious Community Citizen of the Year Award was conferred upon Ms Loshni Mercuri. Ms Mercuri was recognised for her leadership and commitment to strengthening community spirit, particularly through her long-standing coordination of Christmas in Narrogin. Her ability to bring together volunteers, local businesses, and community organisations has created inclusive events that have brought joy and connection to thousands of residents.
Shire President Leigh Ballard congratulated all award recipients and nominees, noting that each nomination reflected the strong sense of volunteerism, generosity, and community pride that defines Narrogin.
“The Australia Day Awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge the individuals and groups who give their time, energy, and leadership to make Narrogin a stronger and more connected community,” Leigh Ballard said.
The Shire of Narrogin extends its sincere thanks to all nominees, volunteers, service clubs, and community members who contributed to the success of the Australia Day celebrations.
