MEDIA RELEASE

LOTTERYWEST AND CBH GROUP SUPPORT FIRE RECOVERY

In February 2022, catastrophic bushfires raged through the Wheatbelt region destroying over 60,000 hectares in the local government areas of Corrigin, Cuballing, Narrogin, Bruce Rock and Wickepin. The impact of these fires on the agricultural industry was enormous.

It was the CEO of the Wheatbelt Development Commission Mr Rob Cossart, appointed as the District Recovery Coordinator, who subsequently approached a number of organisations about providing support for the impacted communities through a joint Wheatbelt Fire Recovery Fund.  Lotterywest and CBH rallied to the cause.

Thanks to a $50,000 grant from Lotterywest and a generous $10,000 contribution from CBH  the Shire of Narrogin will see the construction and installation of a sound shell at Alby Park, within the grounds of the Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre.

The Shire of Narrogin determined it was desirous to provide an improved community space at Alby Park. The project with an estimated total cost of some $100,000 will be jointly funded with Narrogin Shire Council contributing to the balance of project costs in the 2022/23 financial year.

This space will provide an opportunity for the community to come together, socialise and support each other in a safe and relaxed environment. The sound shell will enhance the delivery of future public events including for Australia Day and concerts.

A mural installed on the back wall of the sound shell, with a meaningful theme, will speak to the resilience of the local community, particularly in connection to the February 2022 fires.

It will become a permanent reminder to the community of their ability and capacity to overcome hardship and tragedy.

The Shire of Wickepin will receive up to $25,155 from Lotterywest towards a mobile community barbeque trailer and an event to support resilience in the Wickepin community. CBH will contribute an additional further $10,000. For further information email: admin@wickepin.wa.gov.au .

Shire President Mr Leigh Ballard said “We are grateful to the State Government and CBH for their generous support and look forward to constructing a fitting permanent tribute in acknowledging the resilience of our community.”

The Hon. Shelley Payne MLC, Member for the Agricultural region will visit Narrogin on 20 December 2022 to present Lotterywest grant certificates to the Shires of Narrogin and Wickepin.
