Historic Narrogin Goods Shed Officially Reopens

The Shire of Narrogin is proud to announce the official reopening of the restored Historic Narrogin Railway Station Goods Shed, to be celebrated with a community Sundowner event on Monday 17 November 2025, from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm at 21 Fairway Street, Narrogin.

The restoration project was proudly funded under the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program – Phase 3.  Additional contributions from the Shire funded accessibility upgrades such as a fully accessible ramp and toilet block, as well as exterior painting under the broader scope of the upgrade.

The works have carefully renewed the heritage-listed Goods Shed, part of the Narrogin Railway Station Group, a site of high heritage significance that reflects Narrogin’s emergence as a key regional and transport centre in Western Australia’s Great Southern region. Originally constructed in 1922, the Goods Shed is a fine example of early 20th-century railway infrastructure that contributed to the development of the State’s agricultural districts.

The restoration included replacement of the roof, guttering, and wall sheeting, ensuring the building’s preservation and ongoing role within the Railway Heritage Precinct Masterplan, which celebrates Narrogin’s long-standing connection to the rail industry.

The Goods Shed now houses the historic Pm706 steam locomotive, proudly displayed inside the restored building as part of the precinct’s evolving heritage interpretation.

Shire President Leigh Ballard said the project represents an important milestone in preserving Narrogin’s history

The Goods Shed restoration is a testament to community effort and collaboration, ensuring that this important piece of Narrogin’s railway heritage continues to be enjoyed and appreciated for years to come,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer Dale Stewart added that the Sundowner will be a fitting way to acknowledge the many individuals and organisations involved.

The revitalisation of the Goods Shed demonstrates what can be achieved when government, community, and local partners work together to protect and adapt our heritage assets for future use,” he said.

Members of the public are warmly invited to join in celebrating this significant community achievement by registering their attendance via the QR code below or by emailing cdo2@narrogin.wa.gov.au.
