The Shire of Narrogin is one of several designated Astrotourism Towns in Western Australia. This recognition comes as the Shire celebrates Dark Sky Week 2-8 April 2024, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about light pollution and promoting the appreciation of dark skies.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Narrogin Police, Shire of Narrogin and Narrogin Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service are concerned about several deliberately lit fires in Narrogin.

Narrogin, in a move of fiscal and environmental sustainability has unveiled the installation of a photovoltaic system at the Narrogin Caravan Park with a locally acquired and installed 24kW solar system. Each year the Shire of Narrogin and Great Southern Waste undertake the burning of the green waste at the Shire’s Refuse Site on White Road in order to reduce the fire hazard at the site prior to the start of the warmer weather.

The highly anticipated exhibition, Living and Working on the Land: A Countrywoman's Passion Revealed, featuring the Carol & Peter Taylor Collection, has officially opened its doors to the public this September. This remarkable collection of landscape paintings has been revealed for only the second time since it was first exhibited in Narrogin in 2016.

The Narrogin Regional Herbarium, a treasure trove of botanical knowledge, is once again open to the public. Located at the Narrogin & Dryandra Visitors Centre, within the newly refurbished Railway Station, this valuable resource promises to be a source of fascination and education for all. This reopening is the culmination of dedicated efforts by various organisations and individuals. The herbarium, which had been housed at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attractions (DBCA) for many years, was recently gifted to the Shire of Narrogin. Shire President Leigh Ballard in acknowledging the donation, stated “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the former members of the Central South Naturalist Club and to Greg Durrell, Regional Manager of DBCA, for facilitating this significant opportunity to bring the herbarium back into the public domain”.

The Shire of Narrogin is pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached between the Shire and the Y WA through a transition agreement, signifying the conclusion of the Management Agreement pertaining to the Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre. This collaborative agreement reflects the mutual commitment of both parties to ensure the continued well-being and advancement of our community and the operations of the Centre.

Narrogin, 18 August 2023 — Building and Energy, the regulatory authority overseeing safety and compliance in the energy sector, has concluded its comprehensive investigation into the devastating Wickepin-Narrogin bushfire that transpired on 6 February 2022. As a result of the thorough investigation, Building and Energy has initiated legal proceedings against Western Power, a major network operator, for alleged breaches of the Electricity (Network Safety) Regulations 2015. These regulations mandate that network operators take all reasonable measures to ensure that their networks are designed, constructed, operated, and maintained in a manner that guarantees safety.

The Shire of Narrogin, together with Volunteer Chief Bushfire Control Officer Mr Pip Porter, proudly extends gratitude to the State Government’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), for their instrumental support in securing $207,560 under the Mitigation Activity Fund (MAF).

The Shire of Narrogin has come out fully supporting the recent State Government media release announcing the appointment of Agonis Group and Jacobs Australia to conduct a study on the recommissioning of Tier 3 freight rail lines in the Wheatbelt region. This study will assess the Narrogin-Kulin-Wickepin rail lines with the aim of improving road safety and addressing pending looming issues in the district, in particular in relation to the potential risk of up to 500,000 tonnes of white clay (kaolin) coming through the main street of Narrogin Townsite every year, down Kipling Street, a major pedestrian and school bus route, combined with a potentially deadly incline and surrounded by residences.

The Shire of Narrogin is pleased to announce that the new Local Planning Scheme (No. 3) has come into effect on 3 May 2023, replacing the former Town Planning Schemes of the former Town of Narrogin and former Shire of Narrogin. This milestone achievement is the result of extensive collaboration and consultation with the community, stakeholders, and relevant government agencies.
