Shire of Narrogin, an Astrotourism Town acknowledges Dark Sky Week 2024

The Shire of Narrogin is one of several designated Astrotourism Towns in Western Australia. This recognition comes as the Shire celebrates Dark Sky Week 2-8 April 2024, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about light pollution and promoting the appreciation of dark skies.

The Shire of Narrogin is renowned for its pristine dark night sky, offering visitors and residents alike the opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Milky Way. Embracing its participation in Western Australia’s Astrotourism Towns Project, the Shire is committed to sharing and preserving its natural wonder while fostering regional tourism and community engagement.

"Standing beneath the starlit canvas of the Milky Way in Narrogin is an awe-inspiring experience," remarked Leigh Ballard, Shire President. "We are thrilled to be recognised as an Astrotourism Town and to participate in International Dark Sky Week. This designation not only highlights the unique beauty of our region but also underscores our dedication to promoting sustainable tourism and preserving our dark sky heritage."

International Dark Sky Week, taking place from April 2nd to 8th, is an initiative led by DarkSky International, aimed at educating the public about light pollution and advocating for responsible outdoor lighting practices. As part of the festivities, the Shire of Narrogin encourages residents to join in celebrating the occasion and supporting efforts to safeguard the natural darkness of the night sky.

"We invite everyone to join us in observing International Dark Sky Week," added President Ballard. "Together, let us raise awareness and appreciation for our precious dark sky, ensuring that future generations can continue to marvel at its splendour."
