 Charges Laid for Wickepin-Narrogin Bushfire

Narrogin, 18 August 2023 — Building and Energy, the regulatory authority overseeing safety and compliance in the energy sector, has concluded its comprehensive investigation into the devastating Wickepin-Narrogin bushfire that transpired on 6 February 2022.

As a result of the thorough investigation, Building and Energy has initiated legal proceedings against Western Power, a major network operator, for alleged breaches of the Electricity (Network Safety) Regulations 2015. These regulations mandate that network operators take all reasonable measures to ensure that their networks are designed, constructed, operated, and maintained in a manner that guarantees safety.

The unfortunate incident was triggered by a clash between Western Power's power line conductors, resulting in the ignition of the dry grass below. The swift and unrelenting spread of the resulting bushfire inflicted substantial damage to the local ecosystem, animals, property, farm businesses and lives.

The legal case has been scheduled for mention at the Narrogin Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 22 August 2023. The court proceedings will provide an opportunity to address the alleged breaches and determine the appropriate course of action moving forward.

In response to the Wickepin-Narrogin bushfire, Western Power proactively submitted a comprehensive plan to the Director of Energy Safety aimed at mitigating the risk associated with power lines constructed in a similar fashion to the ones implicated in the incident. Building and Energy has been closely monitoring the progress of Western Power's remediation program and remains committed to ensuring that safety measures are diligently and effectively implemented.

Shire President, Leigh Ballard stated “The Shire of Narrogin understands the profound impact that incidents of this nature have on our community, our farmers affected and the environment. We commend Building and Energy for their diligent investigation and enforcement efforts. As the legal proceedings unfold, we anticipate a thorough examination of the evidence and a just resolution to address the impacts of this devastating bushfire”.
