Narrogin Shire has been successful in securing funding from the WA State Government through its Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Mitigation Activity Funds.

Mitigation (risk reduction) activities will be carried out on Crown lands that are managed by the Shire and deemed to be at high risk of bushfire, as well as Shire managed land and reserves. The funds received were for 33 mitigation activities totalling a sum of $184,500 and includes areas in Foxes Lair, White Road Landfill site, Highbury, the Caravan Park and parkland reserves around the built up areas.

The Shire of Narrogin’s volunteer, Chief Bush Fire Control Officer, Pip Porter said “The intended works will make the volunteer’s job safer while protecting the community and critical assets.”

The Shire of Narrogin, President Ballard, himself a volunteer fire fighter with Narrogin FRS stated ”The successful funding into our community will have the effect of making our community more resilient and safer, whilst protecting critical infrastructure and is a direct result of adopting our Bush Fire Risk Management Plan only months earlier.”

The mitigation works include prescribed burning, installation of gates and fencing, creating and re-establishing strategic fire breaks and eco mulching of high fuel areas. The Shire will be seeking quotes from contractors with the experience and equipment in the coming weeks to undertake the required treatment works in the new calendar year as weather and seasonal conditions permit.
