Shire of Narrogin Australia Day Celebrations 2022

The Shire of Narrogin held its ever popular Australia Day Community Breakfast on Wednesday 26 January 2022. Due to the ongoing COVID restrictions, the event was held at the south front of the John Higgins Community Centre, starting the day in a truly Aussie way. MC David Harrison entertained guests with his inimitable wit and humour, and the Bush Poet Frank Heffernan shared his insights on life with thoughtfully penned poems. Seven (7) Narrogin community members took the Pledge of Commitment to Australia, two Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade members were recognised with National Emergency Medals and four deserving members of Narrogin’s community received Citizen of the Year Awards.

In front of a large crowd, Shire President Leigh Ballard and the Hon Steve Martin MLC awarded the winners in each category for the Community Citizen of the Year Awards. The winners of the 2022 Citizen of the Year were:

  1. Community Citizen of the Year (Youth) – Jayeisha Ford - in recognition of her positive role model and leadership skills at school, fundraising for cancer research and volunteering at community and sporting events.
  1. Community Citizen of the Year (Senior) – Evelyn White - in recognition of her role as a volunteer for the Old Courthouse Museum for many years and her participation in other community groups. Evelyn acts as a tour guide and local historian to visitors and residents alike.
  1. Active Citizenship (Group or Event) – 2021 Narrogin Agricultural Show – the Show reflected the dedication and enthusiasm of the NAS in putting together an event that they knew could be cancelled at any moment.  The Show was welcomed by the community, with a high attendance rate reflecting this.
  1. Community Citizen of the Year – Peter Aitchison - for his role as a St Johns Ambulance volunteer, along with his work with youth.  He is a coach and umpire for junior hockey, as well as a youth group leader. Peter also fundraises for cancer research.

President Leigh Ballard said ‘’On behalf of the Shire of Narrogin, Elected Members and the community in general, I’d like to thank the volunteers and attendees who have helped to make today a day to remember’’.

President Ballard added “Congratulations also, to the hard working members of our community nominated for the awards today, and the winners of the awards for 2022. Without the spirit and dedication that you have all displayed, we wouldn’t have the progressive towns and community that we are proud to call our home”.
