Two new installations of ‘funky’ bike stations are turning heads in the Narrogin CBD.
The idea came about several months ago when the Wheatbelt Cycling Collective initiated a project to promote Narrogin as a cycling destination. The suggestions was to use colourful and stylish bike stations to promote community use of bikes and encourage families into the CBD by bike riding. Similar bike stations are extensively used around Perth and other cities worldwide.
Shire President Leigh Ballard said “We thought it was a great idea to promote community use of bikes and encourage families into the CBD by bike, and have a place to secure them whilst visiting local shops and businesses, so the Shire did some research”.
When looking at prices from non- local companies to purchase pre- fabricated models, it was found that prices to supply and deliver were exorbitant. The Narrogin Menshed was approached to see if they were able to fabricate a couple of options at a reasonable cost. The Menshed were very keen to assist, however unfortunately did not have the members with the expertise to fabricate them at the time.
Some local manufacturers were asked if they were able to construct the bike stations at an affordable price. Ray Smith, a local steel fabricator, has been able to accommodate with the two bike stations at a fraction of the price of other non- local and Eastern States’ suppliers.
“They are designed to be creative and not the traditional galvanised bike rack that is ugly and takes up space and to complement our new colourful bins and create vibrancy and activation of the CBD streetscape” Leigh said, “and also, we simply did not have any bike stations in town before now”.
The bike stations have been installed outside the Post Office on Fortune Street and near Mackie Park, on Federal Street.
