Extended Retail Trading for Narrogin

There is now more reason than ever to come take a look at Narrogin with seven-day retail trading approved.

A decision to support, by the request of the Shire of Narrogin, has been approved by the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety to allow for extended trading hours in the Shire of Narrogin for larger retail traders.

The request was submitted to the Shire Council by Coles Supermarkets Australia Pty Ltd seeking support to permanently allow retail trading in the Shire of Narrogin on Sundays and Public Holidays between the hours of 11am and 5pm and late night shopping to 9pm on weeknights, in addition to the already-permitted Thursday night trading. The new rules do not allow trading however on the public holidays of Christmas Day, ANZAC Day, or Good Friday of Easter.

Formal consultation was undertaken by the Shire with both the Narrogin Chamber of Commerce and the community as a whole.

The President of the Narrogin Chamber of Commerce, Bill O’Neill said that not all of their membership was supportive, but that the Chamber’s Committee was supportive due to the opportunity that would present to Narrogin by competing with competitors such as Katanning and Armadale, who already provide trading on Sundays. Bill O’Neill added “By providing retail trading on Sunday, shoppers may resist travelling two hours but rather spend their dollars locally and other retailers may benefit from opening on Sundays because of increased traffic in town”.

Leigh Ballard Narrogin Shire President said “This is great news for Narrogin. We pride ourselves on being a progressive community and such a move could attract other large chain stores to also trade in Narrogin and further drive competition and lower prices and product availability”.
Now that extended retail trading hours have been approved, traders will have the right to exercise individual discretion whether to open or not.
