Australia Day 2021: A Day to Reflect, Respect and Celebrate

The Shire of Narrogin will begin its Australia Day celebration on Tuesday 26 January 2021 in true Aussie style - on the lawn under a shady tree, accompanied by the classic barbeque breakfast!. The event will take place on the grassed area at the front of the John Higgins Community Centre, 50 Clayton Road Narrogin, and commence at 7.30 am with the traditional free Community Breakfast followed by the presentation of the Citizen of the Year Awards, a Citizenship Ceremony, and entertainment by local performers. The Shire’s Australia Day Community Breakfast is hugely popular and is attended by more than 250 people, however ongoing COVID restrictions meant this signature event could not be held at an indoor venue.

The Shire of Narrogin together with hundreds of Australian communities received funding support from the National Australia Day Council to assist with the delivery of a COVID safe event. Narrogin’s Shire President Leigh Ballard ‘’Australia Day is a day to reflect on our nation’s past – a history which began more than 65,000 years ago with the First Australians – the world’s oldest living culture. It is also a day on which we respect and share the stories, histories and contributions of everyday Australians, because we’re all part of the story of Australia’’.

This year, ten community members from Narrogin will make their Pledge of Commitment to Australia. A Pledge of Commitment comes with great responsibilities and privileges and this year’s candidates were born, or were last citizens, in the Philippines, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Britain, Italy and Zambia.

President Ballard went on to say “It is always a fantastic and yet quite a moving experience to administer the Pledge of Commitment and welcome them into the Narrogin community as our newest Australian Citizens. The candidates are always so thankful and proud to have finally become Australian Citizens who will enjoy the fullest of privileges our great country offers which we, who were born here, may sometimes take for granted”.
